I’m sick. What are your best “get well” tips?

by Jacque Gonzales

Being sick isn’t exactly what I wanted to do right out of the gate into 2018 – but here I am! Sore throat, congestion, coughing, headache, sneezing, tired, blah, blah, blah. It could be worse. I decided that I’m going to look at this sick time as something I “wanted to get out of the way” for 2018! Humor me, ok? Also, be thankful that you can’t catch what I have while reading this because my doctor said I’m contagious. Aaaaaaachooo!

I’ve had many people reminding me to drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as possible – which I’m “mostly” doing (I don’t like water!). But a few fantastic people mentioned some special things to try to help me feel better. That got me to thinking that there have to be many “tried and true” things people incorporate to feel better!

So…what are they? What are your best suggestions to feeling better when sick? I know that old saying about “Feed a cold” & “Starve a fever” – does that even work? What other things do you or a loved one do when sick? Please post your suggestions in the comments below!

It’s time to turn on my humidifier, take my decongestant, put the tissue box next to my pillow and TRY to sleep!

First of all what kind of sick are you ? If it’s a cold or flu lots of fluids ( orange juice ), LOTS of rest. Steam showers are great for sinus congestion. AND here is a big hug for comfort !

Stand in the shower as long as you can with the water as hot as you can and let the steam work it’s magic. You can also put a bath towel over your head and turn your bathroom sink facet on really hot and try to breathe in as much steam as possible. It really works to thin out mucus and clear up congestion which will have you feeling better soon! Also, try adding lemon to your cold water for flavor, or even hot water with lemon, fresh grated ginger, and some honey is delish!! All that water will help thin out mucus too! Feel better soon and rest!! Your body needs it 🙂

I agree with the tea. I have one that is from Puuka that is a lemon/ ginger/ manuka honey. Manuka honey is good for you anyway. Also probiotics. I get mine from a beverage called Kevita. Also as mentioned chicken soup and then oranges or other vitamin c fruits. Garlic and zinc are also good at getting the bad stuff out. Also as my mother say–drink water -drink water – drink water. You need to stay hydrated. I have used a Neti pot in the past as well and that helps.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Rest, hot tea and homemade chicken soup. Hope you feel better

Chicken soup is full proof. Grapes are good as they provide nourishment when you can’t eat other things. Stay warm!!! Sometimes a nice hot shower can help. The two most important things are rest and getting liquids. I hope you feel better!

Hi, Jackie ~ I have Common Variable Immune Deficiency which means that I do not make enough of the necessary antibodies to fight off infections. For me, it is the antibodies that affect soft tissue and skin. When I would get a cold, I would be sick for at least a month. Sometimes, it would turn into pneumonia. I have also had an infection in my left leg 3 times. I have been hospitalized and put on IV antibiotics. I tell you that to let you know just how bad things could be for me. After my hospitalization, I decided that I could not live like that. I now take a number of vitamins made by Andrew Lessman. I will never be without Immune Factor. I take 2 per day. If I feel the least bit of a scratchy throat or nasal stuffiness, I take 2 capsules 3 x’s a day and add Vitamin C. Within 24 hours, I feel better and never actually get a cold. I cannot explain how much better I am today. This month, it has been 5 years since I have had a cold or been sick. I am so grateful for these vitamins. They have helped my husband, too. A number of health issues that he had have disappeared.

So many great suggestions! If you are not a tea drinker, hot water with lemon and local honey is good. Here is something to avoid: most dairy. Milk, cream, ice cream, cheese is all mucous-building (don’t mean to be gross). Butter doesn’t seem to bother me, but I gave up the other dairy long ago and it makes such a difference. I used to be congested, get that foggy-headed feeling and was clearing my throat all the time. Will it keep you from getting sick, no but it might just improve your overall health.
Do you do a sinus rinse? I do one every day and I couldn’t live without it. I add a drop of rosemary, tea tree oil or purification (Young Living) oil.
If you are a Young Living user, I swear by Thieves lozenges.
One more strange thing I started doing, thanks to my mom. I put vasoline in my nose before i go to bed. Combined with the humidifier, when I sleep, it makes a huge difference.

As soon as I feel even a tickle in my throat, I reach for my all-in-one Garlic, Echinacea & Zinc tablets. So I use it preventatively, but I have used it before when I haven’t caught it quickly enough to reduce the symptoms. I also prescribe a cuddle from a koala bear, but you are going to have to visit me so that I can hand over my pet “Blinky” to you. Love ya & miss ya. God bless.

Chicken noodle soup. Doesn’t need to be homemade, canned works just as good. Sorry to be repetitive but fluids & rest are what your body needs. I ended 2017 the same way you started 2018. Feel better soon! Hugs! PS. I still miss seeing you on Q!

Jacque..my best cure has always been Hot Tea,Honey and Lemon..if you drink coffee..I’m not kidding this works!! Make a hot cup of coffee..(must be caffeine) before you drink, inhale aroma..and thank me in about 15 minutes when you’re feeling better

I worked with doctors for 30 years and this was the mantra: Rest, Tylenol, fluids. I don’t like water either, but I put Crystal Light in mine and it’s OK. Chicken soup is also great for breaking up any congestion in your chest. Stay away from dairy because that causes more mucus. Feel better!!!

Bubble bath! If you have an oil diffuser, use eucalyptus oil in it. Get well quick sweet one! Oh yes… wear wigwam wollies. Only that kind will do. Check amazon.

To help you sleep, raise the head of the bed so that your head is a few inches higher than your feet. You will be less likely to cough, and thus sleep better.

My pharmacist recommended an antihistamine and a decongestant and told me to take Zyrtec (12 hour)and Advil Cold and Sinus (don’t take the Advil after 5:00 p.m. or you won’t sleep), rest, lots of fluids – yes water is very good for you as it carries away the toxins (2 qts per day minimum) Water also keeps your skin moist and more wrinkle free and your innards work ever so much better too. So water really needs to be your friend. The above won’t cure you but it will relieve the symptoms. So sorry your are sick and good luck kicking the bug. Also, if I feel sinus pressure, have some drainage or sneeze for no reason, I immediately take one Advil Cold and Sinus and it dries up the mucus that is the breeding ground for the virus – yes maybe too graphic but it works everytime!

Hi Jacque,

So sorry you’re not feeling well. While I claim no medical expertise, I will say that the below in various combinations have proven helpful in the past.

Apple cider vinegar–as strong as you can stand it. Kills bacteria.
Honey–creates an environment in which bacteria can’t live.
Cold or steam–while cold seems counterintuitive, it, as well as steam, can lower pressure and thus reduce congestion.
Zicam–a little pricy, but worth every cent.
Zinc lozenges–helps dry things up.

I hope something in here helps and I hope you feel better soon.

Great tips, John. I have taken a note!

Jacque – I hope you feel better soon. My suggestions are based on what has worked for me. Fresh squeezed OJ (room temp) and hot miso soup from your favorite Oriental takeout restaurant. Egg drop soup would probably work as well. Get well.

Ginger Tea. I buy it on Amazon. (Prince of Peace Ginger Honey Tea). Soothing, and it shortens the duration of your cold. Great for sore throats and upset tummy also. Get better soon. ♡♡♡

Cheryl January 4, 2018 - 11:43 PM

Oil of oregano. It helps but tastes awful. Whenever I have a cold or feel “coldy” my husband makes his special homemade gluten free chicken noodle soup for me and within 2 days I’m feeling better!! Feel Better!!!
